Abstract
The present experiments were carried out to explore the functional interrelation between a posterior semicircular canal and the extraocular rectus muscles in the vestibulo-ocular reflex action. In urethane anesthetized rabbits, unilateral posterior canal ampulla was subjected to freon-gas spraying for rapid freeze-inhibition, and reflex responses of the extraocular (horizontal and vertical) rectus muscles were recorded by means of a polygraphic recorder; for comparison of these data obtained by inhibition of the canal, the reflex reactions of the extraocular muscles in response to excitation of the same canal nerve were also recorded. The following results were obtained.
1. Rapid freezing of unilateral posterior canal ampulla elicited reflex relaxation of the medial and superior rectus muscles, and contraction of the lateral and inferior rectus muscles in the ipsilateral eye; while completely opposite patterns of responses were noted in the contralateral eye.
2. Electric stimulation of unilateral posterior canal nerve produced reflex contraction of the medial and superior rectus muscles, and relaxation of the lateral and inferior rectus muscles in the ipsilateral eye: whereas completely opposite patterns of responses were noted in the contralateral eye.
These results reveal that freeze-inhibition of a posterior canal ampulla elicits responses of the extraocular muscles quite opposite to those obtained by excitation of the same canal nerve in both eyes, and may provide another evidence to define the interrelationship between posterior semicircular canals and the extraocular rectus muscles.
